In Honor Of Mullet Toss Weekend on Perdido Key

WHAT IS A MULLET?

A mullet is one of the more popular and plentiful fish indigenous to this area.
It is the only fish with a gizzard and is said to possess mystical properties.  Known as bait fish on the east coast and a local delicacy here.

WHAT IS A MULLET TOSS?
A Mullet Toss consists of individuals on the beach throwing a mullet,
from a 10-foot circle in Alabama across the state line into Florida. 
Not to mention a great excuse to throw a weekend long party,
with lots of fun activities, great music and food!
This year's event will feature local celebrities tossing out a few fish
at Noon, each day (Friday, Saturday & Sunday). 

WHY TOSS A MULLET?
A contribution for each fish flung will go to Local Youth Charities., including local school education and prevention program from the Community Drug & Alcohol Council, Inc. (CDAC) which offers programs, community support and collaboration to address drug and alcohol abuse, tobacco, mental health issues and violence — both in the home and on our streets. 

Each year, with your help, we raise and contribute over
$20,000 to our local charities, especially youth organizations.

We feed them to the birds.

HOW MANY PEOPLE USUALLY COME TO THE MULLET TOSS?
Several Thousand over the course of the 3 day weekend

WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR TOSSING A MULLET?

• Will be tossing one whole mullet (approximately 1 lb.) across the Florida/ Alabama state line.
• Must submit registration form at the beach.
• $15.00 Entry Fee.  You will receive our Interstate Mullet Toss T-Shirt.
• NO gloves or sand on mullet allowed.
• Mullet will be picked out of the water bucket.
  After you throw, retrieve your mullet and toss it back into the bucket. - THANK YOU!
• Mullet will be thrown from a 10' circle down a designated alley.
• No stepping out of circle during your throw and follow through or you will be disqualified.
• Throwing your mullet out of bounds is an automatic disqualification.
• DON'T MISS!  One chance only to qualify for finals.
• Six finalists in men's and women's divisions each day

Walking For Wheel Chairs

Local Teens to Hike Around Perdido Key for Charity

For the fourth year in a row, a group of local kids will circumnavigate the soft sands of Perdido Key…on foot. But trudging 33-miles around the Key is not just a Spring Break fling. These 15-year-olds are on a mission to raise money to buy wheelchairs for disabled children.

The Walk for Wheelchair began in 2008, when best friends, Teal Garth and Chandler Morales, made the trek around the Key in three days. Since then they have enticed more friends to walk with them and  have raised more than $20,000 for Bayside Medical Missions of Fairhope, Alabama. The non-profit organization transports wheelchairs to children in Ecuador who have cerebral palsy and other debilitating diseases.

 "These kids spend their entire lives in the back room of the house,” said Dr. Fellers, an orthopedic surgeon, who started the organization. “Now they can get out of the house, go to school, and be a part of society.”

 While many kids are focused on Spring Break fun, Teal and Chandler will be circling Perdido Key for the fourth time. The walk begins at the Florida/Alabama state line on the morning of April 25 and ends there the evening of April 27. A celebration will ensue at the Flora-Bama Restaurant & Bar.

 This year, the two freshmen at West Florida High School, have enticed a growing group of friends to participate.  “Some of them have done the walk before,” Teal said, “but we have a few who are trying it for the first time. It’s hard but I’m sure they can make it.”

  “There was a huge rain storm the first night last year,” Chandler said, “and our campsite at Fort McRee got totally flooded. The weather got better the next day and we were able to walk.” 

 While they have not visited the children in Ecuador, they plan to travel to South America this year to help deliver the chairs themselves.  “We were invited to Ecuador,” Teal said, “but we couldn’t go last year. I really want to go this time so we can get to know the kids we’re helping.”

Big News for Perdido Key Area

YMCA and Bauer Rd Sports Complex Before County Commissioners

Not to be missed is the recent news that the County Commissioners are set to vote on two very imporant issues centered on the Perdido Key area. 

The Bauer Road Sports complex will be a huge asset to the community as a local recreational area but also as a host site for sports tournaments attended by visiting teams and their families.  It will be a generator of tourist revenues and associated taxes with multi-night stays in our Perdido Key condos and patronage of our local restaurants and other commercial vendors.

The approval of a two year permission to utilize the Baars fields area as backdrop to fundraising for the YMCA is another positive step with far reaching potential for the Wst Pensacola/Perdido Key area.
