The fashonista's of Perdido Key now know what women have known along Garden Street in Pensacola for the past 25 years.
What secret would that be?
The Market & Mainly Shoes, a hip clothier for women in Pensacola. Now, Villagio shopping plaza is home
to the second location. Both locations are owned by Anne Frechette and Peggy Wolverton, who opened the shop in the heart of Perdido Key in February — and the word is getting out on this eclectic retailer for the trendy young girl and modern, mature woman. As Frechette explains, Perdido Key was the perfect location for her line of merchandise.
"All of my friends who live on Perdido Key were telling me that there's nowhere to shop on the island for this type of clothing," Frechette said, standing in the middle of her 850-square foot showroom recently. "So far, we've done real well at this new location. I think our target is tweens to mature women. Much like her downtown Pensacola store, The Market on Perdido Key will carry seasonal wear for women of all ages. And this spring, Frechette has stocked the small, but nicely adorned showroom with some trendy summer stock.
But, like any special boutique, you're going to pay a little more for Frechette's exclusive line than at major department and outlet retailers. It's the old adage of you get what you pay for, as Frechette explains.
"The thing I hear from my customers is that the clothes we sell don't wear out as fast as something cheaper (and similar) at a major department store," she said. "Our merchandise will cost more, but you'll have it for a much longer time. I would call the style here esoteric and eclectic."
So, what lines do they carry? Summer clothes like Michael Stars T-shirts and tanks, BCBG sun dresses, James Perse T-shirts and other Fashion Avenue manufacturers. No clothing retailer can flourish on Perdido Key (especially in the summer months) without a selection of footwear — and Frechette has seen to that, too. Two popular lines include Volatile flip flops, Ugg summer footwear and Sketcher's. The clothing racks bloom with the colors of summer with designer linen dresses, separates, leather belts, and sun dresses.
No, there isn't a "man seat" to wait while your better half shops, but the showroom has some trophy kills on the wall, large deer heads staring down, lamps made of antlers and even a lion's skin rug, complete with head. If that doesn't keep us men occupied, then just go upstairs to the Jellyfish Bar and wash a couple of cold one's down, dude.
